The opening statements remind me of something GK Chesterton said about the problem of good in the world being at least as interesting if not more interesting than the problem of eveil in the world

The second papragraph recals to mind the approach of Annie Dillard in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. She describes the beauty of the natural world with great fluency and then shocks us with equally fluid descriptions of the ugliness and cruelty of the natural world
